What procedures does the following information apply to?
To the verification of Hungarian citizenship and vital statistic registration in Hungary. There are different requirements for translations of vital statistics certificates to be used for naturalization, detailed here.
Do Canadian vital statistics certificates require diplomatic legalization?
No, no further authentication at all is required for original Canadian certificates.
Do I have to present an original or will a photocopy suffice?
Vital statistics certificates have to be submitted in original, which will be sent to Budapest. If you explicitly request, the originals will be returned to you at the end of the procedure.
Do I have to have Canadian vital statistics certificates translated?
Yes, if the certificate was filled out by hand. English and French certificates filled out by machine/computer do not require translation.
What Canadian certificates are acceptable?
Wallet-size birth certificates are common in Canada, but these have no information on parents. In many cases people do not have state-issued marriage certificates, only a certificate from the clergyman or marriage officiant. Short form Canadian certificates lack data that are crucial for the purposes of examining Hungarian citizenship applications and registering vital statistics events in Hungary.
The general requirements are:
- The certificate has to be a state-issued one. The province shall issue it, not a clergyman or a funeral home etc.
- Birth certificates shall contain the name of parents.
- Marriage and death certificates shall include other data besides the name of the bride, groom or the deceased, at the very least the exact place and date of birth.

What are the requirements for US certificates?
The same as for Canadian ones. Neither diplomatic legalization (Apostille), nor translation is necessary.
The same general requirements shall be observed:
- The certificate has to be a state-issued one. The state shall issue it, not a clergyman or a funeral home etc.
- Birth certificates shall contain the name of parents.
- Marriage and death certificates shall include other data besides the name of the bride, groom or the deceased, at the very least the exact place and date of birth.
And for other non-Hungarian certificates?
Information on diplomatic legalization:
- Diplomatic legalization is required as a general rule. Obtaining one usually entails two steps: authentication by the foreign ministry of the issuing country and the legalization by the Hungarian consul resident in or accredited to the given country.
- An Appostile shall be affixed to the certificate if it was issued by a member country of the Apostille Convention.

Information on translations:
- No translation is necessary for Austrian, German, UK, Australian, English-language South African, New Zealand certificates.
- Multilingual certificates from CIEC member countries do not have to be translated if they include an English or a German translation, are in a table format and there are no remarks on them which are only featured in the language of the issuing country.
- You do not need to have other English, French, Spanish, German or Hebrew certificates translated, we can prepare an official translation of these free of charge.
- In any other case OFFI can prepare an official Hungarian translation.
